Sibling of stylishly renovated Casa Chafariz, Casa Saint Jorge has been refurbished with equal amounts of love and attention to detail. Swedish in design, the ethos is ‘Lagom’, meaning ‘just the right amount’. Cosy and light, the walls are painted with Farrow & Ball, bathing the spaces in shades of yellow and blue-green.
Overlooking the Alfama district of Lisbon and within the historic walls of Saint George’s Castle, you’re in a first-rate position. Choose from 7 modern apartments, some with terraces and views to the glimmering River Tagus. Sitting in a hilltop location, come evening we recommend you take in the vistas and the glorious sunset.
Important to note: the property complies with Turismo de Portugal's Clean and Safe stamp of approval, meaning it meets rigorous hygiene and cleaning requirements.
With smart marble-clad kitchenettes complete with cooking utensils, a dishwasher, electric stove, microwave, fridge freezer, coffee machine and toaster, you’re well-equipped to self-cater. Why not head to one of the local markets to pick up supplies? Mercado da Ribeira is a 25-minute walk away, and home to all manner of fresh produce. While you’re over that way, do try Manteigaria for custard tarts (pastéis de natas) at the Time Out street food haven next door. Slightly further afield are Mercado de Campo de Ourique, Mercado 31 de Janeiro (known for fish and seafood), and Principe Real Biological Market – particularly popular for organic goods, and situated in a pretty neighbourhood too.
But if you're not keen on cooking every day, there are a host of excellent restaurants close to the apartments. Grenache is just a 3-minute stroll, and features dishes such as glazed teriyaki octopus with pickled onion, yuzu jelly and vegetable spring rolls; catch of the day with mussels, chorizo and korma sauce; and slow-cooked lamb with eggplant moussaka, yoghurt and jus.
Wander for 10 minutes and you’ll reach Taberna Moderna, where delights such as black risotto, tuna with sesame seeds, cuttlefish rice, and Galician veal entrecote are served. Plus a whopping 80 varieties of gin.
As the sun goes down, if you’re not at your apartment having a drink and admiring the scenery, head to Chapito, where you’ll find one of the greatest views of Lisbon.
The 7 apartments are spread over four floors, and each has been renovated with maximum care and flair. The end result? All units are welcoming, and have their own personality. Some sleep 2, others house 4; all have a slick kitchenette. Situated in the historical centre and close to the River Tagus, the location is prime yet peaceful.
For that bit of extra space choose a residence with a lounge area or a patio. We love the 1-bed apartment with Tagus views and a terrace – head out there for a sunbathe, or enjoy an alfresco drink and meal.
On an environmental note: eco-friendly cleaning products and toiletries are used throughout. Damana is the brand of choice, an enterprise that embraces the Care About Earth programme.
The property lies just a stone’s throw from Miradouro do Recolhimento, a well-known scenic viewpoint. And the Saint George's Castle neighbourhood is a treasure trove of traditional architecture – time can easily slip away as you wander the picturesque cobbled streets.
You’re also walking distance to a number of top sights and attractions, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Carmo Convent, Praça do Comércio, and Sé Cathedral. And a tram or bus ride from areas such as Belem, LX Factory, and Monsanto Park.
