A former 18th-century hunting lodge nestled in the bucolic paradise of Northern Tuscany, Albergo Villa Marta makes for a tranquil retreat. This luxury country house is a hidden sanctuary, located just a short drive from the picturesque town of Lucca. Whether losing yourself in the extensive parklands, or simply reclining by the pool with a good book, a stay at Albergo Villa Marta is one of peaceful relaxation. With an on-site restaurant serving hearty Tuscan delicacies you may be tempted never to leave, although it’s certainly worth venturing to nearby Lucca or Pisa.
The Botton d’Oro restaurant at Albergo Villa Marta serves a great selection of traditional, seasonal Tuscan specialities including risotto and hand-made pasta in its intimate dining room. As one might expect from a hotel in the heart of Tuscany, the wine list includes some of the best local wines, including some lesser-known vintages that are well worth a try.
During the high season, the restaurant is open daily except on Sundays, while during the low season it is important to note that the restaurant is only open on Fridays and Saturdays. The hotel serves a light bistro-style menu when the restaurant is closed, and staff will be more than happy to provide you with a picnic should you wish.
Rooms are decorated in an elegant Tuscan style, with traditional terracotta floors, exposed beams, and original frescoes in one of the pricier rooms. If you’re after a truly unforgettable stay, plump for the Deluxe Rooms, which are very spacious, with sweeping views of the Lucchesi countryside.
A former hunting lodge, the hotel is set within an extensive area of parkland filled with fragrant local flowers, lemon and pine trees, and gnarled olive groves, meaning that there is plenty of space to find a bit of peace and quiet. The hotel has a small pool, perfect for a refreshing dip during the summer months. If you want to indulge yourself just a little bit more, there are massages available, ranging from aromatherapy to traditional olive oil massages. In the summer months these are enjoyed in the fragrant surroundings of the garden; during the winter, in the privacy of your own room.
Albergo Villa Marta is close to the small town of Lucca. For an enjoyable day-trip, hire one of the hotel’s bikes and enjoy the feeling of cycling through the gorgeous Tuscan countryside. Lucca sits behind an impressive set of Renaissance-era walls, and its cathedral contains works by Tintoretto and Domenico Ghirlandaio. For fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding area, take a hike up the 230 steps to the top of the Torre Guinigi: look carefully, and you can even see the hotel from this birds-eye view.
