A former 18th-century hunting lodge nestled in the bucolic paradise of northern Tuscany, Albergo Villa Marta makes for a tranquil retreat. This luxury country house is a hidden sanctuary, located just a short drive from the picturesque city of Lucca. Whether losing yourself in the extensive parkland, or simply reclining by the pool with a good book, a stay at here is one of peaceful relaxation. With an on-site restaurant serving hearty Tuscan delicacies, you may not be tempted to leave, although it’s certainly worth venturing to nearby Lucca or Pisa.
The Botton d’Oro restaurant serves a selection of traditional, seasonal Tuscan specialities including risotto and handmade pasta. Enjoy a meal in the intimate dining room or out on the terrace. As one might expect from a hotel in the heart of Tuscany, the wine list includes excellent local wines, including some lesser-known vintages that are well worth a try.
During the high season, the restaurant is open daily except on Sundays, while in the low season only open on Friday and Saturday evening. The hotel serves a light bistro-style menu when the restaurant is closed, and staff will be more than happy to provide you with a picnic should you wish.
Rooms are decorated in an elegant Tuscan style, with traditional terracotta floors, exposed beams, and original frescoes. If you’re after a truly unforgettable stay, plump for a spacious Deluxe bedroom with sweeping views of the countryside, or the Chapel Suite, a separate unit located in a church in front of the main house.
A former hunting lodge, the property is set within an extensive area of parkland filled with fragrant flowers, lemon and pine trees, and gnarled olive groves – plenty of space to find a bit of peace and quiet. There's also a small pool, perfect for a dip during the summer months. And if you want to indulge yourself just a little bit more, massages are available, ranging from aromatherapy to traditional oil. In the summer months these are enjoyed in the fragrant surroundings of the garden; during the winter, in the privacy of your own room.
Albergo Villa Marta is close to the city of Lucca, known for its cobbled streets and well-preserved Renaissance walls. For an scenic day trip, hire one of the hotel’s bikes and cycle through the gorgeous Tuscan countryside into the historic centre. The cathedral contains works by Tintoretto and Domenico Ghirlandaio, and for fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding area, take a hike up the 232 steps to the top of the Torre Guinigi – look carefully, and you can even see the hotel from this birds-eye view.
