Spread over 21,000 square feet, Relais dei Magi was built in 1812 and can be found on the edge of Città della Pieve, an Umbrian town close to the border with Tuscany. The 12-room country house sits among 70 hectares of olive trees and lush fields and is a haven for food and wine lovers. The relais operates in an eco-friendly way too, with 50% of energy produced from a solar system. Expect a friendly welcome from hosts Luca and Giulia, who have a wealth of experience in the luxury hotel arena. "The beauty of Relais dei Magi is the feeling of being at home," says Luca. "Antique local furniture, touches of contemporary décor, and non-standard items make the villa unique."
Children over 12 are welcome and there’s private (and free) parking. Pets are not allowed.
Umbricelli (a thicker version of spaghetti) is a speciality at the on-site restaurant; other dishes you may find on the menu include boar and fillet of perch from nearby Lake Trasimeno. A zero food miles ethos is in place, with seasonal ingredients sourced locally. Use is made of regional delicacies such as black truffle and saffron of Città della Pieve, which has grown in Umbria since the 13th-century. Dine out on the terrace with views to the glorious countryside and Lake Trasimeno, and accompany your meal with an Italian wine of your choice – the list includes around 30 bottles from nearby producers.
And if guests would like to venture out, Luca and Giulia will happily make recommendations, ranging from traditional wine bars and local trattorias to Michelin-starred establishments.
The Umbrian relais houses a maximum of 30 guests across 4 bedroom categories ranging from Superior Room to Double Suite. You’ll find yourself either in the main building or one of the property's outbuildings. Traditionally decorated, some feature separate living areas with fireplaces, others a private patio.
The top floor Junior Suite in the main house is Luca's favourite, and a popular choice with guests too – home to a 3-sided terrace, it offers complete privacy.
There’s a large pool to lounge around, an outdoor Jacuzzi, and a wellness centre complete with a Finnish sauna and steam room. If you fancy a stroll, take the 4-kilometre signposted trail through woods and olive groves.
The relais is within an hour's drive of a host of towns and sights ranging from Lake Trasimeno and Montepulciano to UNESCO-designated Assisi, and about 75 minutes from Siena and Perugia. If you’re interested in wine and olive oil you couldn’t come to a better place: there are some top vineyards to visit in the surrounding areas including Tili Vini (where you can also go truffle hunting), Cantina Scacciadiavoli, Madonna Del Latte (which could be coupled with a trip to volcanic Lake Bolsena), and Salcheto.
Back at the hotel, wind down with a spot a yoga or Pilates if the mood takes you – there's an area to practice in the pretty grounds. And if you fancy getting to grips with pasta-making, the chef will happily oblige with a lesson. Or simply find a scenic spot – of which there are many – and relax with a drink. During summertime, head for the tilia tree with its natural shade. The dining terrace is also a top spot for a beverage, particularly a sundowner.
Note: the wellness centre is currently closed for preventative measures.
Pets are not allowed.
Free parking is available.
