Just outside the pretty town of Galatone in Salento, Masseria Fulcignano offers a real taste of Puglian country life. Set in the archaeological park of Castello di Fulcignano, amongst olive and fig trees and surrounded by hectares of farmland, dotted with the traditional pagghiare (peasant shelters) – this is an idyllic spot indeed.
The style here is one of simplicity, with the old farm buildings lovingly renovated using natural materials to create a stylish and comfortable 18-bedroom boutique hotel. The staff are lovely and go out of their way to ensure you have a good stay. With the peaceful, countryside setting and a soundtrack of cicadas – all you can do is relax.
Masseria Fulcignano is also available to hire for weddings and private events.
The restaurant serves a changing menu of delicious local fare out on the lovely terrace.
The 18 rooms are chic and minimalist, the pricier boasting original stone walls and a more stylish design, with muted colours, ceramics and cacti dotted about the place.
It's worth noting that most are without windows but this is in line with the age and tradition of the buildings and keeps things cool in the summer heat.
There is a lovely swimming pool perfect for cooling off in the hot summer months. There are also bicycles available for hire.
Masseria Fulcignano is well-placed to explore the best of the region including both the Ionian and Adriatic coastline – the lovely clear seas round Gallipoli are just 15km away and Otranto around 45km. The hotel’s nearest town, Galatone, is just a 5/10-minute drive away or a 30-minute walk.
