50 Things to Do Before You’re 11 ¾ is inspiring us to get outdoors with the family

Fishing in the British countryside while staying in our luxury hotels UK

If you’re planning a family staycation right here in the UK in the next few months and hoping to make the most of the Great British countryside, an initiative by the National Trust will definitely help you in enjoying some unforgettable quality family time in the great outdoors.

Titled 50 Things to Do Before You’re 11 ¾, the initiative encourages kids (and their parents) to explore the countryside and learn more about our surroundings, whether you’re on your own doorstep or are enjoying a getaway on the other side of the country. Below are just some of the suggestions of activities the whole family can get stuck into:

Catch a fish with a net

Whether you head to a streaming river or a still lake, all you’ll need for this is a fishing net and some worms for bait. Watch the world go by as you wait for movement in your net, and then pull it up to see what you’ve caught!

Pick blackberries growing in the wild

The autumn season means that many of the British countryside’s hedgerows will now be lined with juicy blackberries just waiting to be picked. See if as a team you can fill up a bowl which can later be turned into a tasty treat such as jam, crumble or compote.

Find your way with a map and compass

Before smartphones came along, we had to use our own devices, with a map and compass being the ultimate navigation tools. If you’re heading out for the day, or even just enjoying a short woodland walk, lose yourself in the glorious countryside and navigate your way home – it’s all part of the fun.
