Lisbon, Portugal

The Portuguese are in every way as skilled at celebrating as their Spanish neighbours. Start your evening with some delicious cocktails in 1908 Lisboa’s buzzing bar, before heading out to soak up the New Year cheer in the city’s main square – Praça do Comércio – where lively festivities take place.

After the clock strikes twelve, head to the hip and vibrant Barrio Alto area for a spot of bar hopping; the area is full of cool and quirky little bars and nightclubs, all brimming with heaps of atmosphere. Perfect for a unique and alternative New Year’s Eve.

Alternatively, you can head a little out of town for the evening: Torre Belem – one of the most famous monuments in Lisbon – hosts its own musical performances, dance parties and firework displays. The fantastic location of the Torre will provide party goers with phenomenal views of the Atlantic Ocean: a beautiful backdrop for your New Year celebrations.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Hailed as one of the best cities in South-East Asia for an exhilarating New Years party, Kuala Lumpur is more than worth the travel. Spend your evening high up in a rooftop bar, watching the fireworks and festivities all over the city. Come morning, the enticing lagoons of Villa Samadhi beckon: a fresh and welcome cure for a late night.

When visiting Kuala Lumpur over New Year’s the options are endless. Why not start off at KLCC park? This gorgeous, 5-acre, lake-toting park is transformed into an enormous concert venue with live music performances by local and international groups. As with every great New Year, the evening is finished with an impressive round of fireworks. There are plenty of bars, pubs and restaurants in the area for you to carry on the party at or you can head to Changkat Bukit Bintang: a thriving street of tiny bars and ever-flowing drinks. Ideal if you fancy dancing until the early hours.

Another option is either the KL Tower or one of the many elegant rooftop bars which adorn the city. If you’re after a bit more of a slower evening then this is the best option for you. Sit back, relax and sip the champagne as fireworks illuminate the surrounding night sky. From high-up you will have the best vantage point and will be able to observe the city’s revelry without getting too involved.

Cruising down the Thames, watching the spectacular display of fireworks colour the dark city sky has to be one of our favourite ways to spend New Year’s Eve. Barcelona, Spain

Not only is Barcelona a fabulous spot for a New Year’s fiesta, but The One also comes complete with it’s own rooftop cocktail bar: providing you with a relaxed yet classy start to the evening. As the night progresses, head out to one of the many street parties although beware that, as soon as the clock strikes twelve, there is a strong chance of cava being sprayed over the crowd. Salud!

As previously mentioned, Barcelona’s streets and squares are rife with parties on New Year’s Eve. The biggest of these being Avinguda Maria Cristina, which hosts a vibrant celebration centred around featuring fireworks, music, special effects all centred around the Montjüic fountains.

The crowds file out pretty quickly after 12pm so it’s best to have lined up a club or bar to head to then. Barcelona is known for a vibrant nightlife and the range of options on New Year’s Eve do not disappoint. We recommend doing a bit of research depending on your music preferences and also booking ahead as the clubs are sure to be pretty packed.

Top tip: heading out to any Spanish New Year celebrations? Make sure you bring cava and 12 grapes. Each grape represents a month of the new year and the Spanish tradition is to eat a grape with every chime of the clock at midnight. With that in mind it’s perhaps best to have a practice at speed eating grapes at home before the big day. You can’t say we didn’t warn you…
