Cliveden House is a superb boutique hotel in Berkshire, a retreat that's been visited in the past by Churchill, Lennon, Chaplin, Kipling, and Lawrence – to name-drop just a few.
More than a luxury retreat, it's a stately home and a grand one at that. Surrounded by over 350 acres of Grade I listed landscaped gardens and parkland, Cliveden has far-reaching views over the River Thames and the rolling countryside. And with a tranquil spa, play den, individually styled rooms, and fine dining restaurant, it's a top spot for both romantic escapes and family breaks.
At Cliveden, the food, wine, service, and atmosphere are all top-notch. The formal Dining Room serves modern British dishes (think smoked paprika cured monkfish with blood orange, sherry, and oregano, or roasted cod loin with crab ‘lasagna’, fennel, and apple) while open all-day Astor Grill is a more casual option (expect the likes of beetroot and ricotta tortelloni, spiced lamb burger and beer-battered fish of the day). And Afternoon Tea is served daily in the Great Hall.
The 48 rooms and suites at Cliveden are named after guests and personalities who have been party to the stately home's colourful history. Sutherland's romantic chimneypiece melts the hearts of many, while the countryside views from the marble bathtub make Henry James one of the most decadent. Location is just as important: book a bedroom in the main house rather than one on the ground floor, most of which are by the car park.
Tucked away inside Cliveden's walled garden, made famous by its association with the Profumo affair in the 1960s, the spa provides a haven of tranquillity and offers an impressive choice of beauty and holistic therapies using brands such as Sarah Chapman and Oskia.
Enjoy the indoor and outdoor swimming pools and tennis courts as well as the fully-equipped Technogym before relaxing in the steam room, sauna, hot tubs or Jacuzzi. And on a lovely summer's day catch a few rays in the grounds. A jaunt down the River Thames on one of the hotel's fully-electric fleet is a must, especially with a picnic on board. And for more family-friendly activities, there's the on-site maze and play trail.
Free parking is available.
