A magnificent country house hotel just outside Slough, Stoke Place is the idyllic antidote to urban life. The 26-acre grounds only add to the tranquil feel; they were originally designed by celebrated 18th-century landscape artist, Lancelot Brown (also known as ‘Capability Brown’).
It’s allure doesn’t end there; the 17th-century mansion holds a rather unusual history. After cooking up a sensational coronation meal for King Charles II, royal chef Patrick Lamb used his fortune to build this magnificent country house. It has passed into other notable hands since, including military Lieutenant Thomas Howard, before finally becoming a state-of-the-art hotel in the mid 20th-century.
Today, the hotel has been carefully renovated with modern and stylish furnishings, with the odd period piece dotted here and there. Add to that the charming staff and you’ve got all the ingredients for a restorative break.
The hotel restaurant here has big shoes to fill. Rising to the challenge exceptionally, it serves delicious British and French fare and goes by the name of King & Lamb. Breakfast is just as good: served cooked-to-order, the menu includes all the classics and more.
Rooms are situated in the original 17th-century building, with each sporting elegant and contemporary décor, and some with views out to the gardens. Beds are comfortable and bathrooms are sleek.
Garden Rooms and Gatehouse Rooms are dog-friendly (extra charge applies).
Take a stroll in the manicured gardens, or kick back and relax on the terrace. If it’s something more active you’re after, head to the hotel gym or hire a bike and whizz through the grounds on wheels.
There’s much to explore in the area while you’re here too: Slough city centre is just a short drive away, and further afield, Windsor Castle is definitely worth a visit.
Dogs are welcome. An additional charge will apply, please check with our reservations team for prices.
