Situated in the heart of the City Quarter, just outside the centre of town, charming Clayton Hotel Cambridge (formally The Tamburlaine) is inspired by the city itself. Cambridge Blue features throughout, the bar serves up cocktails inspired by the city, and the inviting library is based on the famous colleges’ nearby.
With a remarkable double-height lobby featuring two elaborate custom-made chandeliers and a dramatic black steel spiral staircase, this quirky hotel certainly makes a magnificent first impression. The opulence continues through to the spectacular Garden Room, where silk velvet sofas, an array of lush plants and intricate Victorian wallpaper make the perfect backdrop to a delectable Afternoon Tea.
Although larger than many of our picks, this is nevertheless a truly unique chic retreat – great for those looking to stay somewhere that really makes the most of the rich Cambridge ambience.
As the hotel has four separate places to eat and drink (a brasserie-style restaurant, garden room, library, and delicatessen), there’s no need to go hungry. Breakfast includes a continental buffet and à la carte options. For lunch and dinner, Head Chef David Ellams serves up a menu of simple but delicious dishes using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Some favourites include stone bass with potato and pancetta terrine, halibut with a caramelised cauliflower purée, and pork cheek with ham hock bon bon.
For something to tide you over after lunch, head to the library or the modern Steam Deli to snack on some light bites. Later on, Afternoon Tea is available in the rather extravagant garden room. In the evenings, the bar serves a superb range of impressive cocktails – including the magnificent (and rather punchy) Cambridge Sour.
Each of the spacious rooms has been individually designed with bespoke furniture - including Irish-made King Koil beds - and rather smart marble bathrooms. Many boast floor-to-ceiling windows, stunning views of the city and countryside and some suites come with the added treat of balconies.
Located within walking distance of all the city’s main sights, Clayton Hotel is an ideal place from which to explore Cambridge. Only minutes away from the hotel are the Botanic Gardens: 40 acres of stunning grounds and intriguing glasshouses.
For a cultural night out, head to the nearby Cambridge Corn Exchange, a live music venue where you can catch a show from some of the world’s leading artists.
Alternatively, for a lazy afternoon in, head to the peaceful hotel library, lounge on the leather armchairs, bask by the heat of the open fire, and tuck into a good book.
