Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp is perched on a ridge overlooking the hills of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand surrounded by 160 acres of indigenous gardens and is a wonderful spot to experience the enchanting world of elephants first-hand.
To really make the most of this once in a lifetime experience, the all-inclusive Discovery package combines a stay in a luxury room or suite with elephant, spa cooking and cultural experiences – all in a tranquil jungle setting.
Start your evening with a refreshing G&T or an exotic cocktail at the Elephant Bar and Opium Terrace, and if you don't feel like moving you can order light snacks to graze on. But if you do, head to on-site restaurant Sala Mae Nam where traditional Thai food is served using seasonal, local produce. Try Kao Soi Gai, a mouth-watering yellow noodle coconut chicken curry that's one of the signature dishes from the north (Lanna). Enjoy your meal out on the terrace while admiring the dramatic views.
Another option is Baan Dhalia, an Italian dining experience with plates ranging from Caesar salad, burrata and calamari, to lasagne, veal ossobuco and beef tagliata.
Anantara is also known for its Dining by Design experiences – create your own menu and dine wherever you so wish (it's even possible to eat alongside the elephants in the bamboo forests of the camp).
The peaceful setting is made up of 40 rooms and 21 suites (6 of which are for families). Expect teak floors, Thai silks, king-size beds, down duvets, iPod docking stations, Espresso machines, and spacious balconies with magnificent views of the Mekong River, three-country, or landscaped gardens.
On-site Dara Camp offers unforgettable adventures and unique experiences with elephants. Created in 2003 as a traditional mahout (people who work with, ride, and tend elephants) village, they work alongside the Anantara Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation to rescue the magnificent creatures, provide employment, and a comfortable lifestyle for the elephants and their carers. And the camp plays a part in the wider picture too, by helping establish improved conditions for all of Thailand's elephants. As a mahout trainee, join the giant animals on their daily walk through native forests and picturesque rice paddies while learning about behaviour patterns and biology, and how to bond with them through commands and light touches behind the ear.
After a day with the majestic mammals, head to the open-air pavilion spa to relax and regroup. Other activities include cooking classes, heading down the Mekong on a longtail, visiting hill-tribe villages, or visiting Laos and Myanmar for the day.
