Hotels in Menorca

Balearic Islands

Laid-back, low-key and utterly lovely, Menorca is a world away from its hedonistic siblings: here rolling fields, wooded groves and Moorish towns give way to idyllic rocky coves. The region’s rich history is evident: mysterious megalithic stones, 17th-century ports and Georgian architecture all bear testament to a turbulent and colourful past. Sensitively developed, the island’s Unesco-protected natural charms are its main asset: explore peaceful hiking trails, rural hideaways and white-sand beaches at a leisurely pace.

When to go

The island is particularly striking when it’s adorned with springtime bloom. July and August can be too hot for an active holiday, but summer lingers here: early autumn is just right for a splash in the still-warm waters.

Food & Drink

Mayonnaise is said to have been invented in Mahon, but Menorca’s culinary delights go far beyond this disputed claim to fame. Don’t leave without a taste of Cafe Balcar’s caldereta de langosta, the island’s flavourful lobster stew. Local cheeses and soft sobrasada sausage go down well with pomada, a refreshing tipple of local Xoriguer gin and cloudy lemonade: try Can Vermut in the island’s capital for exceptional tapas.

Not to miss

Ponder enigmatic talayots and navetas, the Bronze Age stone mounds and tombs dotting the island. Naveta d’es Tudons is one of the best preserved, and has sweeping countryside views to boot.

Menorca’s nightlife buzzes gently along throughout the year, though it’s more subdued than on Ibiza or Mallorca. Aklaree, by the Mahon cliffs, has expertly mixed cocktails and mellow live jazz sessions. In Cala en Porter, cave-carved Cova D’en Xoro is a relaxed watering hole that turns into a club at night.

Where to stay in Menorca

Set on a ridge overlooking the deepest harbour in the Mediterranean, Mahon is a quaint, gentle capital proud of its traditions and 18th-century good looks. Plump for a boutique hotel in the countryside nearby – sprawling gardens and open-air swimming pools are just the ticket in the summer heat.

How to get there

Menorca’s airport serves year-round flights to domestic destinations and seasonal routes to most European hubs.
